Cochemiea hutchisoniana (H.E.Gates) P.B.Breslin & Majure grows either singly or in clusters, producing olive green cylindrical shoots that grow up to 15 cm tall and 4–6 cm in diameter. The species has short, conical olive green warts that do not produce milky sap, with axillae that are either bare or slightly woolly. It has four 7–10 mm long brownish central spines that have purple tips, with the lowest middle spine being hooked. There are 10–20 5–8 mm long erect, slender, needle-like marginal spines; these are initially purple to black, and turn white as they mature. Flowers of this species are slightly pink, cream, or white with a dark central stripe, and reach 25–30 mm in diameter. The fruits are club-shaped, scarlet, and 20 mm long, holding black, dotted seeds that are less than 1 mm in diameter. This species is commonly found on the Baja California peninsula of Mexico.
