In Portuguese, this species has multiple common names: favela, faveleira, faveleiro, and mandioca-brava. It is endemic to Brazil, and its known distribution within the country covers the states of Bahia, Pernambuco, and Piauí. The common Portuguese name 'favela' for this plant is the origin of the Brazilian term 'favela' referring to low-income informal urban settlements.
