About Clitocybe nebularis (Batsch) P.Kumm.
Clitocybe nebularis (Batsch) P.Kumm. is a mushroom species with the following physical characteristics. Its cap ranges from 5 to 25 centimetres (2 to 10 inches) in diameter; it starts convex with an incurved margin, and matures into a plane to depressed shape. Cap color is generally greyish to light brownish-grey, and young caps are often covered in a whitish bloom. The cap surface is usually dry to moist, and radially fibrillose. Its gills are pale, adnate to short-decurrent, closely spaced, and usually forked. The stem measures 5 to 10 cm (2 to 3 and 7/8 inches) long and 2 to 4 cm wide. It is stout, swollen toward the base, becomes hollow as it ages, breaks easily, and is usually somewhat lighter in color than the cap. The flesh is white, very thick, and typically has a foul-smelling odour, which has been described as ranging from slightly farinaceous to spicy, or rancid. The spores are yellow and elliptical, and the spore print is light yellowish. In terms of ecology, this species acts as a host for Volvariella surrecta, a parasitic gilled mushroom that grows on older Clitocybe nebularis specimens.
