About Clinopodium arkansanum (Nutt.) House
Clinopodium arkansanum is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows to approximately 5โ30 cm (2โ12 inches) in height. It has four-angled stems that range in color from green to reddish-purple.
Its leaves are oval-shaped, measuring about 3 mm (0.12 in) wide and 1โ3 cm (0.5โ1 in) long. The leaves have untoothed margins and lack leaf stalks. They are arranged oppositely along the stem, but often appear whorled because the plant produces additional leaves in the axils of the main leaves.
White to purple, mint-like flowers of Clinopodium arkansanum bloom primarily in spring and summer. The flowers grow from the leaf axils and reach about 12 mm (0.47 in) in length. The fruit produced by this species is a one-seeded nutlet.
This plant is native to southeastern North America, where it occurs naturally in the American states of Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, as well as the Canadian province of Ontario. It grows primarily in moist to wet limestone-containing soil, and grows best in full sun.
