About Clarkia amoena (Lehm.) A.Nelson & J.F.Macbr.

Clarkia amoena (Lehm.) A.Nelson & J.F.Macbr. is an annual plant that reaches up to 1 meter in height. It has slender, linear leaves that measure 2 to 7 centimeters long and 2 to 6 millimeters broad. Its flowers range in color from pink to pale purple, and each has four broad petals that are 1.5 to 6 centimeters long. Its fruit is a dry capsule that splits open when mature to release numerous seeds. Commonly called Farewell to spring, this species is widely cultivated as a garden plant, and many cultivated varieties have been developed. It is a cool-season plant that can tolerate temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F) when grown in gardens or greenhouses. It produces flowers more quickly under long-day conditions, and grows best when given minimal fertilizer. Popular cultivars introduced in the 1980s include the tall cut-flower type 'Grace' and the short potted-plant type 'Satin'. A gallery of these cultivars is presented below.
