About Cladonia boryi Tuck.
This lichen forms roundish masses that reach roughly 20 cm (7.9 in) in diameter. Multiple masses can grow together to cover a broad area of the ground. Its podetia are wider than those of most other species in the genus Cladonia, and their walls are often irregularly perforated. Podetia terminate in small coronets, whose tips are typically maroon in color. Most records of this species come from the northeastern United States, with occasional documented records from other locations including Japan. It usually grows on sand dunes, bare sand, or in forest glades.
