About Cirsium remotifolium (Hook.) DC.
Cirsium remotifolium (Hook.) DC. is a thistle species commonly called fewleaf thistle. It is native to the western United States; its native range extends along the Pacific Coast, and may reach as far east as the Rocky Mountains, depending on which populations are classified as belonging to the species. It can sometimes be found growing as part of the serpentine soils flora. This native plant is a perennial herb that reaches a maximum height of around 1.5 meters. Its leaves grow from spiny petioles, and have toothed or lobed edges; the lowest leaves located at the base of the stem can grow up to 50 centimeters in length. The plant's inflorescence consists of clustered flower heads, lined with spiny phyllaries. Each flower head is filled with white or purple flowers that can reach up to 2.5 centimeters long. The plant produces a fruit that is an achene a few millimeters long, topped with a pappus that can measure up to around 2 centimeters in length.
