About Chylismia heterochroma Small

Chylismia heterochroma is a species of evening primrose that goes by the common name Shockley's evening primrose. This species is native to desert slopes and woodland areas in eastern California and Nevada. It is an annual herb covered in hair and glands, with a spindly stem that can grow up to one meter tall. It produces a thick basal rosette of leaves; most of these leaves are oval-shaped, measure several centimeters long, and the plant generally does not grow leaves further up its stem. The inflorescence bears several small flowers, each with four oval petals that are just a few millimeters long. The petals are lavender, with yellow-tinted bases. The fruit of the plant is a club-shaped capsule that is roughly one centimeter in length.
