Chorthippus vagans (Eversmann, 1848) is a species of grasshopper commonly known as either the heath grasshopper or the steppe grasshopper. It belongs to the subfamily Gomphocerinae. This grasshopper occurs across the Palearctic region, spanning through Russia and Kazakhstan, reaching east into Siberia and north as far as Denmark. It is a rare species in the British Isles. In Central Europe, this species is typically found at altitudes ranging from 300 to 600 m (980 to 1,970 ft). In the French Calcareous Alps, Chorthippus vagans can be found on Mont Ventoux at altitudes up to 1,900 m (6,200 ft). The steppe grasshopper inhabits warm, dry locations that have sparse, low-growing vegetation.
