About Chorizanthe fimbriata Nutt.

Chorizanthe fimbriata Nutt., commonly called fringed spineflower, is a low-lying plant. It grows 10 to 50 centimeters (3.9 to 19.7 inches) tall, and spreads to 1 to 3.5 meters (3.3 to 11.5 feet) in diameter. It produces small, star-shaped flowers that have 5 lobes. The flower lobes are reddish-purple, and the flower tubes are yellow. There are two recognized varieties of this species: Chorizanthe fimbriata var. fimbriata and Chorizanthe fimbriata var. laciniata. This species is endemic to the San Jacinto Mountains of California, and the Peninsular Ranges of Southern California and Baja California. It grows at elevations below 1,600 meters (5,200 feet), in the habitats of coastal sage, montane chaparral, and woodlands.
