About Choisya ternata Kunth
Choisya ternata Kunth is an evergreen shrub that reaches a maximum height of 3 m (10 ft). Its leaves consist of three leaflets, which is the origin of the species name ternata, and the leaves are aromatic. When crushed, they release a scent that resembles basil. The plant bears fragrant white flowers in spring, and sometimes produces limited repeat flowering in autumn. This species is native to Mexico. It is drought tolerant and prefers well-drained soils. Choisya ternata is widely grown as an ornamental shrub in suitable climates. It can tolerate temperatures down to −10 °C (14 °F), but suffers severe damage at temperatures lower than −15 °C (5 °F). It responds well to pruning and shaping. In addition to the standard species, a number of cultivars are grown. These include the golden-leaved C. ternata 'Lich', which is usually sold under the name Sundance, and the interspecific hybrid C. 'Aztec Pearl', a cross between C. dumosa var. arizonica and C. ternata. The original species and these two cultivars have all earned the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
