Scientific name: Chlosyne palla (Boisduval, 1852)

Description: Adult Chlosyne palla are often confused with other members of the palla group: sagebrush checkerspot (C. acastus) and Hoffmann's checkerspot (C. hoffmanni). The adult wingspan ranges from 30–48 mm (1.2–1.9 in). The upperside of the wings features a pattern of dark brown, light orange, and tan. The underside of the wings has alternating red and yellow cells.

Life cycle: This species has one flight period each year, which takes place between April and May, or between April and July in mountainous or more northerly areas. Caterpillars of this species feed on goldenrod (Solidago), rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus), and asters.
