About Chlosyne gorgone (Hübner)

This species, commonly known as the gorgone checkerspot, has a wingspan ranging from 32 to 45 mm. The dorsal surface of its wings is orange with black markings, and the hindwings feature a submarginal row of solid black dots. The ventral side of the wings displays a zigzag pattern made up of brown and white bands, with a median row of white chevrons. The gorgone checkerspot is native to North America, where its range extends from Alberta east to southern Ontario, south into central Texas, and lies between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachians. Within this range, the species is most often found in open areas such as ridges, prairies, and old fields. It can also be found along streamsides and in open hardwood forests. In the northern portion of its range, the gorgone checkerspot produces one brood annually between July and August. In the mid-range of its distribution, it produces two broods annually between May and September. In the southern portion of its range, it produces three broods annually between April and September. Females lay their eggs in clusters on the underside of their host plants. Early instar caterpillars feed in groups, and third-instar caterpillars hibernate.
