About Chlosyne acastus (Edwards, 1874)

Adult Chlosyne acastus are often confused with two other Chlosyne species: the northern checkerspot (C. palla) and Hoffmann's checkerspot (C. hoffmanni). The wingspan of adult individuals ranges from 33 to 44 mm, which is 1.3 to 1.7 inches. For its life cycle, there is one single flight period per year that takes place between May and early September in Canada. Caterpillars of this species feed on rabbit-brush (Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus) and desert-aster, a plant from the Machaeranthera genus.
