About Chlorornis riefferii (Boissonneau, 1840)

The grass-green tanager, with the scientific name Chlorornis riefferii, is a small South American bird that belongs to the tanager family Thraupidae. It is the only species classified in the genus Chlorornis. This bird measures 20 cm in length and weighs an average of 53 grams. It inhabits subtropical and temperate forests and the surrounding areas of these habitats in the Andes mountain range, across Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Peru, occurring at elevations between 1500 and 3350 meters. It is typically observed either alone in pairs, or in small groups of 3 to 6 individuals. It does most of its foraging in the upper half of short trees, and its diet consists of both fruits and insects. The species is known for perching its body almost horizontally when resting. Its nests are constructed from mosses and ferns, and its eggs are gray with small, light purple-grey dots.
