About Chlorophyllum brunneum (Farl. & Burt) Vellinga

Chlorophyllum brunneum, commonly called the shaggy parasol, is a large, noticeable agaric mushroom. Its fleshy white cap is covered in thick brown scales and raised bumps, and egg-shaped when young, becoming wider and flatter as it matures. Both the gills and spore print of this mushroom are white. Its stipe is slender, uniformly colored with no patterns, and has a bulbous base. When the mushroom is cut, its flesh develops a reddish or maroon discoloration and releases a strong, pungent odor. For all three species in this group, the cap reaches 6 to 20 centimetres (2+1โ„4 to 7+3โ„4 inches) across. The stipe grows 5 to 20 centimetres (2 to 8 inches) tall, with a maximum diameter of 2 to 3 centimetres.
