About Chlorophonia cyanea (Thunberg, 1822)
Chlorophonia cyanea is a small, plump bird that is primarily green in overall coloration. Its underparts are yellow, while the mantle and lower nape, rump, and eye-ring are blue. Some subspecies have a yellow frontlet on the head. Females are duller in appearance than males; their underparts are more greenish-yellow, and their mantle and lower nape have less blue coloration. The distribution of Chlorophonia cyanea is highly disjunct. Separate populations are found in the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina; in the Andes extending from southern Bolivia to northern Venezuela; in the Perijá and Santa Marta Mountains; in the Venezuelan Coastal Range; and on the Tepuis. All populations of this species are associated with humid forest, but it can also be found locally in nearby gardens and parks, especially in the Atlantic Forest region. Most populations occur in subtropical highlands, but in the Atlantic Forest region, the species can be found down to near sea level.
