About Chlorodrepanis flava (A.Bloxam, 1827)
The Oʻahu ʻamakihi (Chlorodrepanis flava) is a species of Hawaiian honeycreeper that belongs to the family Fringillidae. Adult males have rich yellow underparts, sharply contrasted with greenish upper body plumage. Females are duller in overall color and have two prominent wing bars. This species reaches a total length of approximately 4.5 inches, which equals 11 cm. It is endemic to the island of Oʻahu in Hawaiʻi, and is likely the only surviving honeycreeper species that is endemic to this island. This bird tends to occupy the wetter southern area of Oʻahu, as well as the valley near Wahiawa and Mililani. It can be easily spotted in two major protected areas: Honouliuli Preserve and the Wa'ahila Ridge State Recreation Area. It prefers to stay in forests, but has adapted to at least some non-native forest types. It will nest and forage in wooded urban areas, but favors native habitats dominated by koa (Acacia koa). It mainly occurs at altitudes above 1,650 feet, which is 500 m, but can be found at lower elevations in some valleys within its range.
