About Chloris truncata R.Br.

Chloris truncata, with the scientific name Chloris truncata R.Br., is a perennial grass. Its common names include Australian fingergrass, windmill-grass, Australian windmill grass, and it is often simply called windmill grass by people local to Australia. This is a low-growing grass that forms small clumps approximately 30 centimetres in diameter. It produces long leaves that measure around 10 to 15 centimetres long, with a distinctive blunt tip and a flattened leaf sheath at the base. The foliage is light green and has a prominent central vein. The species gets its common windmill-related names from its large, windmill-shaped flowering heads, which can be around 30 centimetres across. Each of the long black spikes that make up the flowering head is lined with black seeds, and every seed has two awns. This plant sets seed in both summer and winter. It spreads at a moderate rate, but is relatively difficult to propagate. It prefers to grow in full sun, and can be used as a lawn grass if mown lightly.
