About Chloanthes parviflora Walp.
Chloanthes parviflora Walp. is a small, rounded shrub that grows to 30โ90 cm (12โ35 in) tall, usually with a woody base. Its leaves are pressed closely against the stems. The leaves are pale green, rough, and linear, measuring 1โ4 cm (0.39โ1.57 in) long and 2โ5 mm (0.079โ0.197 in) wide. The upper leaf surface is wrinkled and blister-like, while the underside is white and woolly, with leaf margins rolled under. Mauve, tubular flowers grow singly in the leaf axils, and are 15โ30 mm (0.59โ1.18 in) long. The flower tube has purple spots and is hairy, with a larger lower lobe that measures 8โ12 mm (0.31โ0.47 in) long. Flowers are borne on a pedicel that is mostly 1โ2 mm (0.039โ0.079 in) long, with a style around 10โ15 mm (0.39โ0.59 in) long. The bracts are leaf-like, sessile, and linear or linear-lance shaped, with rolled edges. They are 1โ2.3 cm (0.39โ0.91 in) long and 1.5โ3 mm (0.059โ0.118 in) wide, with a wrinkled upper surface, woolly underside, and a texture that can be smooth, slightly warty, or covered in small, hard protuberances. The smaller bracts are sessile, linear or needle-shaped, 5โ10 mm (0.20โ0.39 in) long and about 1 mm (0.039 in) wide, with a wrinkled, smooth upper surface and a woolly underside. The calyx has 5 linear to linear-oblong lobes; the outer calyx surface is smooth and glandular, while the inner surface is smooth. The lobes are 7โ10 mm (0.28โ0.39 in) long and 1.5โ2 mm (0.059โ0.079 in) wide at the base. Flowering occurs from June to November, mostly in spring. The fruit is usually oblong to obovate, dry, somewhat compressed, 0.5 cm (0.20 in) in diameter, and notched at the apex. This species grows in sandy to gravelly soils in heath and sclerophyll forest. In New South Wales, it grows from north of Cooma to Grafton, Coffs Harbour, and the Pilliga Scrub, and in the southern part of the state between Braidwood and Nerriga. In Queensland, it occurs mostly in eastern and south-eastern locations, including Jericho, Blackdown, Brisbane, and areas near Rockhampton and Toowoomba.
