Common Names and Taxonomy

Chiropterotriton orculus, commonly called the Chignahuapan splayfoot salamander and also known as Cope's flat-footed salamander, is a species of salamander belonging to the family Plethodontidae.

Distribution

This species is endemic to Mexico, where it occurs along the southern and eastern margins of the Mexican Plateau, ranging from northern Morelos to northern Puebla.

Taxonomic History

It was removed from the synonymy of Chiropterotriton chiropterus in 1994, and there may be additional undescribed species within this species complex.

Habitat

Its natural habitats are pine-oak forests and fir forests, and it can tolerate a moderate degree of habitat modification.

Abundance and Ecology

It is a relatively common terrestrial species.

Threats

This salamander is currently threatened by habitat loss driven by logging and human settlement.
