It has several common names: Christmas berry (a name it shares with Passerina ericoides), bitterbossie, and aambeibessie. This plant is a bushy shrub. It can grow up to 1 meter (3 feet 3 inches) tall, and most individuals reach 0.5 meters (1 foot 8 inches) in both height and width. Its Afrikaans common name aambeibessie references its supposed traditional medicinal use for treating haemorrhoids. It is grown as an ornamental plant, and it prefers to grow in sandy soils. It is classified as mildly toxic.
