About Charitospiza eucosma Oberholser, 1905

The coal-crested finch, whose scientific name is Charitospiza eucosma, is a bird species in the tanager family Thraupidae. It was previously classified in Emberizidae, the family of buntings and American sparrows, but molecular phylogenetic studies have confirmed it belongs to the large tanager family Thraupidae. This species is the only member of the monotypic genus Charitospiza. It occurs mainly in the Cerrado region, with small populations also found in Bolivia and northern Argentina. Its native natural habitat is dry savanna. It feeds on seeds from plants that grow specifically in these habitats, and it is currently threatened by habitat loss.
