About Chamaecyparis pisifera (Siebold & Zucc.) Endl.
Chamaecyparis pisifera (Siebold & Zucc.) Endl. is a slow-growing coniferous tree that reaches 35 to 50 meters in height, with a trunk that can grow up to 2 meters in diameter. Its bark is red-brown, vertically fissured, and has a stringy texture. Foliage grows in flat sprays. Adult leaves are scale-shaped, 1.5 to 2 millimeters long, and have pointed tips, which differ from the blunt leaf tips of the related species Chamaecyparis obtusa (hinoki cypress). Adult leaves are green on the upper surface, and green on the lower surface with a white stomatal band at the base of each scale leaf. They are arranged in opposite decussate pairs along the shoots. Juvenile leaves, which grow on young seedlings, are needle-shaped, 4 to 8 millimeters long, soft, and glaucous bluish-green. The cones of this species are globose, 4 to 8 millimeters in diameter, with 6 to 10 scales arranged in opposite pairs. They mature in autumn around 7 to 8 months after pollination.
