Chaetogastra herbacea has the scientific name Chaetogastra herbacea (DC.) P.J.F.Guim. & Michelang., and its synonym is Tibouchina herbacea. It is a flowering plant species belonging to the family Melastomataceae. It is native to southern Brazil and north-eastern Argentina, and has been introduced to Hawaii. It was first described by Augustin de Candolle in 1828 under the name Arthrostemma herbaceum.
