About Chaenactis nevadensis (Kellogg) A.Gray
Chaenactis nevadensis is a perennial herb. It produces several short stems that reach just a few centimeters in height, surrounded by a basal rosette of small, woolly, multilobed leaves. The inflorescence develops on a short peduncle. Each flower head is lined with rigid, blunt-tipped, glandular phyllaries, and contains several white or pink flowers that have long, protruding anthers. Its fruit is an achene topped with a pappus made of scales.
This species is native to high mountains in eastern California. Its range extends through the Sierra Nevada from Shasta County to western Inyo County, and into the southernmost Cascade Range. A small number of populations are also found in Washoe County, Nevada. It grows in sandy or gravelly soils in subalpine habitats.
