About Ceriagrion tenellum (de Villers, 1789)

Ceriagrion tenellum is a small damselfly that reaches a total length of only 25–35 millimetres (0.98–1.38 inches). It is noticeably shorter than the large red damselfly, a species it is often confused with. For individuals of both sexes, the top surface of the thorax is bronze-black. Males of this species have a completely red abdomen. Females have a bronze-black abdomen, with red coloration only on the front and back sections. The dark morph melanogastrum has an almost entirely dark abdomen, marked with pale divisions between its segments; the last two of these segments are reddish. A very rare morph, erythrogastrum, has a similar appearance to the male of the species.
