Cercyonis sthenele Boisduval, 1852 has a dark brown body. Each forewing bears two eyespots, with the upper eyespot being larger than the lower one. Its wingspan ranges from 39 to 44 mm, or 1.5 to 1.7 inches. This species has a flight period that runs from late June to late August. It inhabits arid woodland (especially pinyon-juniper woodland), chaparral, and brushland habitats. The distribution of Cercyonis sthenele covers most of the western United States, and its range extends north to southern British Columbia, Canada.
