About Ceratogomphus pictus Hagen, 1854

Ceratogomphus pictus, commonly known as the common thorntail, is a dragonfly species that belongs to the Gomphidae family. It has been recorded in Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. There is one isolated record from Katanga, so it may also occur in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its natural habitats are the edges of large pools and slow-flowing streams. This dragonfly measures 46–53 mm in body length, with a wingspan of 60–69 mm. It has a yellow face marked with black bands, and its eyes are greyish blue. The synthorax features broad grey and greenish-yellow stripes, which are bordered by thin black lines. Abdominal segments 1 through 7 have broken black and yellow rings. Segment 8 has large yellow foliations that have black edges. Segment 10 bears a sharp, forward-pointing spine that extends over the top of segment 9.
