About Ceracris kiangsu Tsai, 1929

Ceracris kiangsu is a species of grasshopper belonging to the subfamily Oedipodinae, and it is sometimes referred to as the yellow-spined bamboo locust. This species is found in Indo-China and southern China, where it can become a locally significant agricultural pest. No subspecies of Ceracris kiangsu are listed in the Catalogue of Life. Researchers have observed mud-puddling behaviour in this species: the insects are attracted to the sodium and ammonium ions found in human urine. This grasshopper overwinters in the egg stage, with the overwintering period lasting up to nine months before the eggs hatch.
