About Cepphis advenaria (Hübner, 1799)

This species, Cepphis advenaria (Hübner, 1799), has a wingspan of 23–26 mm, and forewings that measure 14–17 mm in length. The ground colour of the wings is usually whitish, or whitish ochreous that is freckled and clouded with grey brown, or heavily mixed with deep ochreous. The cross lines on the wings are slightly darker than the ground colour. The first line on the forewing is sometimes nearly straight, while the second line forms an angle in the middle, curves posteriorly, and is commonly directed obliquely outwards at the hindmargin. The markings may be tinged with ochreous, or with red. The hindwing bears a dark dot. The aberration fulva Gillmer is uniformly irrorated across the entire body and wings, giving it an overall dark yellow-brown appearance that is unmarked except for the discal dots. The larva is variable in colour: it is purplish grey or olive brown, with pale grey dorsal lozenges on the abdomen and 2 pale yellow oblique spots or dashes on the second abdominal segment. The venter is more reddish, and marked with dark V-shaped patterns. The pupa is stout and rugose, and not glossy; the dorsum and abdomen are light brown, while the wings and legs are greenish. For additional information, see the genus description in Watson, L., and Dallwitz, M.J. 2003, and Prout. Cepphis advenaria is distributed across Europe, through Russia to the Altai Mountains, the Sajan Mountains, the Amur region, the Primorye region, Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, and also occurs in Eastern China, Korea and Japan. Its main habitats are blueberry forests, heaths and bogs. In the Alps, this species can be found at altitudes up to 1500 metres.
