Centaurea scabiosa L. is a perennial herb. It produces an erect, grooved stem that grows up to 90 cm tall. Its leaves are alternate, pinnatifid, and borne on stalks. The species produces flower heads that measure up to 5 cm across, which sit on long stalks. Its florets are red-purple in color. This plant grows in dry grassland, along roadsides, and on calcareous substrates. It is native to Europe and Asia, and is found in Great Britain and Ireland. In Europe, it occurs in most regions, with the exception of parts of Portugal and several islands including Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia, Mallorca, the Greek islands, and Iceland. In Asia, it occurs in the Caucasus region and Siberia, excluding Chukotka and Magadan Oblast.
