About Cenchrus caudatus (Schrad.) Kuntze

Cenchrus caudatus (Schrad.) Kuntze is characterized by feathery awns and a robust growth form. It is a rhizomatous geophyte. This species is indigenous to tropical and southern Africa, and its native range extends to the Arabian Peninsula. It has been introduced to a number of other regions: Austria, California, the Canary Islands, Great Britain, Hawaii, the North and South islands of New Zealand, Saint Helena, Tasmania, and Texas. Cenchrus caudatus prefers open, sunny locations and tolerates a wide variety of soil conditions. It can be found growing in open grasslands, woodlands, along rivers, and in areas disturbed by human activity, including waste spaces.
