About Celmisia durietzii Cockayne & Allan
Celmisia durietzii is a low-growing perennial plant. It produces stalked flowers that have yellow centers and white petals. Three key features help distinguish this species from other Celmisia: its sheath is translucent and hairless, its achenes are evenly covered in hairs, and its leaves are short and somewhat narrow. Its habitat is also useful for identification: it does not grow in coastal areas like Celmisia lindsayi, nor does it grow in wet habitats like Celmisia bonplandii. This species is confirmed to occur in New Zealand’s South Island, ranging from Marlborough south to Fiordland. It has been reported to extend further into Fiordland and onto Stewart Island, but these outlying populations may represent a currently undescribed species rather than true Celmisia durietzii.
