About Celastrina ladon echo (Edwards, 1864)
Celastrina ladon, commonly known as the spring azure or echo blue, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Lycaenidae. This butterfly is found across North America, ranging from Alaska and Canada south of the tundra, through most of the United States—excluding the Texas coast, southern plain, and the Florida peninsula. Its range extends south through mountain regions to Colombia, and it is also present on Molokai island, Hawaii.
After Eliot & Kawazoe published a monograph covering the Lycaenopsis group of lycaenid genera in 1983, some taxonomic authorities have classified C. ladon as a subspecies of Celastrina argiolus (Linnaeus, 1758). Other taxonomic authorities continue to recognize C. ladon, along with related species C. neglecta and C. serotina, as separate full species.
The wingspan of Celastrina ladon ranges from 22 to 35 millimetres (0.87 to 1.38 inches). Females have metallic blue wings with a black margin. The undersides of the wings are white with speckles.
