About Ceanothus thyrsiflorus Eschw.

This species, Ceanothus thyrsiflorus Eschw., is an evergreen shrub. In its native chaparral habitat, it can grow over 6 meters (20 feet) both tall and wide. Its leaves are glossy green, shiny, and around 4 centimeters (1+1⁄2 inches) long. In spring, it produces clusters of tiny flowers that range from various shades of blue to near white. Ecologically, this plant attracts birds, butterflies, and other pollinators, and honeybees frequently visit it to collect its pollen. It has been widely grown in gardens, where it prefers a warm, sheltered location in full sun. Multiple cultivars have been selected for cultivation: 'Blue Mound' grows up to 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) tall; 'Cascade' can reach a height of 8 m (26 ft); 'El Dorado' is a variegated cultivar with gold-edged foliage and powder blue flowers; 'Repens' remains a low shrub reaching around 1–3 m (3 ft 3 in – 9 ft 10 in) tall; 'Repens Victoria' forms a sturdy evergreen mound, makes an effective groundcover, and bears powder blue flowers; 'Skylark' is a tall cultivar with blue flowers, and holds the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit; 'Snow Flurry' produces white flowers.
