About Catonephele acontius Linnaeus, 1771

Scientific name: Catonephele acontius Linnaeus, 1771. Description of the male, first described by Dru Drury: On the upperside, the antennae, head, thorax, and abdomen are black. All wings are a fine, velvety black. An orange bar, around 1/4 inch (6 mm) wide, starts in the middle of the forewings, curves across the hindwings, and meets near the middle of the abdominal edges. On the underside, the palpi are white, the tongue is brown, the breast and legs are white, and the abdomen is yellow brown. The underside of the wings is shining brown, and displays different shades of shifting, iridescent colors, with wing tips ending in an ash grey color. The wing edges are barely toothed. This species has a wingspan of 2 3/4 inches (70 mm).
