About Catocala relicta Walker
Catocala relicta, commonly known as the white underwing or the relict, is a moth species belonging to the family Erebidae. Francis Walker first formally described this species in 1858. Its distribution ranges across southern Canada, from Newfoundland to Vancouver Island, and extends south into the United States to Missouri and Arizona. The wingspan of adult Catocala relicta measures between 67 and 75 mm. Adults are active from July to September, producing one generation per year that varies with the species' location. The larvae of Catocala relicta feed on a wide range of host plants: Betula papyrifera, Carya ovata, Populus alba, Populus balsamifera, Populus deltoides, Populus nigra, Populus tremuloides, species in the Quercus genus, and species in the Salix genus, including Salix eriocephala.
