About Catocala herodias Strecker, 1876

Catocala herodias, commonly known as the Herodias underwing or Gerhard's underwing, is a moth species belonging to the family Erebidae. This species was first formally described by Strecker in 1876. The nominate subspecies is native to the US states of Texas and Oklahoma. The subspecies Catocala herodias gerhardi ranges across the eastern United States, occurring from Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York south to Virginia. This subspecies is officially listed as endangered in the US state of Connecticut. The wingspan of adult Catocala herodias measures between 55 and 65 millimeters. Depending on their location, adults are active on the wing between July and August. This species likely produces just one generation per year. The larvae of Catocala herodias feed on Quercus ilicifolia and Quercus rubra.
