About Catocala flebilis Grote, 1872

Catocala flebilis, commonly called the mourning underwing, is a moth species belonging to the family Erebidae. This species was first formally described by Augustus Radcliffe Grote in 1872. It is distributed in North America, ranging south from Massachusetts and Connecticut to North Carolina and Georgia, extending west to Arkansas, north to Michigan and Illinois, and reaching into southern Ontario. The wingspan of adult moths measures 45 to 65 mm. Adult Catocala flebilis are active on wing from July to September, with the exact timing varying by location. The larvae of this species feed on Carya glabra and Carya ovata.
