Catocala coccinata, commonly known as the scarlet underwing, is a moth species belonging to the family Erebidae. This species was first formally described by Augustus Radcliffe Grote in 1872. It can be found in southern Canada, the eastern United States, extending along river valleys into the Great Plains and reaching as far south as Florida. The wingspan of adult Catocala coccinata ranges from 57 to 70 mm. Adults are active in flight from June to September, with the exact timing varying based on the location. The larvae of this moth feed on Quercus species, specifically including Quercus macrocarpa.
