About Castilleja purpurea (Nutt.) G.Don

Castilleja purpurea, commonly called downy Indian paintbrush, is a wildflower native to the U.S. states of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri. Different subspecies of this plant produce flowers that vary widely in both form and color. Blooms can be white, pale yellow, or peach, and may also have a pink tinge; the foliage can be either green or purple. There is ongoing scientific debate over whether the currently recognized subspecies of C. purpurea should each be classified as their own distinct species within the genus Castilleja.
