About Castilleja elmeri Fernald
This species, Castilleja elmeri Fernald, produces unbranched stems that grow from a small woody base, reaching a maximum height of 30 centimeters. Its leaves are lanceolate in shape and typically smooth-edged (entire). The inflorescence forms a relatively compact head compared to other Castilleja species; this head is most often red or pale yellow, but can sometimes be nearly white, or occur in intermediate color shades. All leaves, stems, and bracts are covered in fine, short hairs. Its native range extends through mountainous regions from southern British Columbia to Washington State's Wenatchee Mountains and Mount Rainier. In the Wenatchee Mountains, Castilleja elmeri is notably common on serpentine soils.
