Castanospora is a monotypic genus, meaning it contains only one species, belonging to Sapindaceae, the plant family that includes maples and lychees. The only species in this genus is Castanospora alphandii, which is commonly called brown tamarind. This species grows naturally in rainforests of eastern Australia, ranging from approximately Coffs Harbour in mid-northern New South Wales northwards to Rossville in far northern Queensland.
