About Castanopsis fargesii Franch.
Castanopsis fargesii Franch. is an evergreen tree that reaches 10 to 30 meters in height. Its specific Latin epithet fargesii honors the French missionary and amateur botanist Père Paul Guillaume Farges, who lived from 1844 to 1912. This species grows in evergreen broad-leaved forests at elevations between 200 and 2,100 meters, and can be found in Anhui, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Taiwan, Yunnan, and Zhejiang. The nuts of Castanopsis fargesii contain high-quality edible starch. Its bark is used to make dyes, and its hardwood is used for construction and cabinetry work.
