About Carpinus japonica Blume
Carpinus japonica, commonly known as Japanese hornbeam, is a species of hornbeam that is endemic to Japan, and cultivated in other regions as an ornamental plant. It is a deciduous tree that grows 12 to 15 metres (39 to 49 feet) tall. Its leaves are longer and darker than the leaves of the European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus). The leaves themselves are dark, glossy and slender, with 20 to 24 pairs of parallel sunken veins, and every third tooth on the leaf margin is tipped with a fine whisker-like hair. This species produces prominent catkins that are green when young and turn brown as they mature. Carpinus japonica has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
