Commonly known as woolly chaffhead, Carphephorus tomentosus (Michx.) Torr. & A.Gray is a species of flowering plant in the family Asteraceae, native to North America. It is specifically found in the southeastern United States, occurring naturally in the states of Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. This plant is an herb that grows up to 80 cm (32 inches) in height, and its entire body is covered in dense hairs that have a wool-like appearance. It bears a flat-topped inflorescence made up of many small purplish flower heads; each flower head contains only disc florets, with no ray florets present.
