About Caroxylon aphyllum (L.fil.) Tzvelev

Caroxylon aphyllum, commonly known as the ganna or kanna bush, is a small shrub species that belongs to the family Amaranthaceae. It grows in the arid Karoo region of southern Africa, and is typically found growing in deep, dusty, saline soils located in valley bottoms and dried river plains. This shrub is so common in its range that its name has become the designation for a specific type of Karoo ecosystem called "gannaveld", which is sometimes also referred to as "vlakteveld". Its name has even been used for the local government area Kannaland Local Municipality. This species was previously classified under the name Salsola aphylla.
