Carex trisperma Dewey is a clump-forming, perennial plant that grows from a rhizome. It has basal and alternate flat leaves with whitish leaf sheaths, and its basal sheaths are brownish in color. The stems are slender and reach up to 2 feet in length. It typically produces up to 3 stalkless spikes, with staminate flowers located at the base of the spikes and pistillate flowers at the tip. Its fruit is an achene, which develops from late spring through summer. This species has a circumpolar distribution. It favors wetland habitats, including swampland and bogs found within coniferous forests.
