About Carex tomentosa L.
Carex tomentosa L. is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows to heights of approximately 20 to 40 cm and produces long stolons. Its stiff, upright triangular stem is rough and hairy near the top, and has a blackish-red sheath at its base. The stem leaves are grey-green, up to 2 mm wide at most, and have triangular tips. The lowest bract develops like foliage, extends beyond the spikelets, and often projects outward horizontally. Most individuals bear up to two female spikelets that measure 0.5 to 1.5 units in length, plus one terminal male spikelet. These spikelets are short-stalked and positioned some distance away from the rest of the plant. Fruiting spikelets have white and brown spots. The husks are pointed, range in color from red to light-brown, and have a green central nerve. The fruit tubes are 1.5 to 2 mm long, grey-brown, spherically ovate, and have a hairy, felt-like surface. This species primarily blooms in May and June, and its chromosome count is 2n = 48.
